Dr. Emily Mahan-Riggs
Dr. Emily Mahan-Riggs, child of two wildlife biologists, grew up in Southern Illinois and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian since the age of 6. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2009. After working at the Kansas State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory performing diagnostics in their serology lab, she obtained her veterinary degree from North Carolina State University in 2017, and eventually earned her Master’s in Veterinary Science from the University of Illinois in 2023.
Dr. Mahan-Riggs (or Dr. MR…doctor mister, as we in the office like to call her!) spent 8 years as a pig vet. Six of those years were spent working for Smithfield Hog Production in Eastern North Carolina and the other two were spent Cactus Family Farms and Passel Farms in Southern Iowa. With incredible mentorship from Drs. Wilkerson and Hedrick at Crossroads, she is very excited to make a career pivot into small animal medicine. She joined Crossroads Animal Hospital in July 20225. She truly enjoys connecting with clients while providing the best care for her patients.
She met her husband, now a Lt, Colonel in the Army, while at Mizzou and they were married in 2009. They have three children: Clara (14), Lydia (6), and Ezra (3). They share their home with a very energetic lab, Lenni (2). They are excited to be living the closest they have ever been to their extended families and are very happy to call the Liberty area home.
In her spare time, Dr. MR enjoys reading (she read 131 books in 2025!), working out at Liberty Community Center, running with Lenni, and spending time with family exploring the area and relaxing at home.
